Typical UX methods

When to use which UX methods

The field of user experience has a wide range of methods available, ranging from methods having their roots in scientific practice, such as lab-based usability test studies to those that have been more recently developed, such as remote UX assessments.

A small selection:

  • User observation and interviews
  • Personas
  • Scenarios and task-flows
  • Storyboarding
  • Card sorting
  • Conceptual modeling
  • Prototyping and wireframing
  • Usability testing
  • A/B testing
  • Web analytics
  • etc.

The set of methods needs to be adjusted to meet the project's needs. An important distinction to consider when making a choice among methodologies is the phase of product development and its associated objectives.
